Assignment Description: This was the assignment that set the foundation for our final, refined project. I used it as a way to come up with a hypothesis backed up using my basic knowledge in chemistry and narrowing the final project down to what I need to do and test for accurate results.

Project Description: The main objective, or at least what I took away from this project was that we use chemistry or chemistry related processes in our everyday life without even realizing it. So through this approach, we could make something of our choice and learn about the chemical reactions it undergoes when heat is added.

Project Description
Throughout the art and chemistry unit we learned a variety of different techniques to create unique forms of art while also being able to express ourselves and learn what chemical reactions are happening in the process. We really enjoyed the cyanotypes we had created early on in this unit as they were one of the ways that people printed photos not only for fun but for careers such as botany and blueprinting maps. With that being said, we figured it would not only be fun to create cyanotype of our choosing but put them on t-shirts so that we can really represent our art. |
With such a historical impact on photography all over the world today, we wanted to send it back a couple decades to experience photo development before the land of technology was created. When we first did this lab at the beginning of the semester, we got to pick a picture that was important to us which made us think we could put even more passion into this project by making tee shirts with pictures that we highly value. Jo picked her favorite movie poster and did cyanotype splatters on her tee and I wanted to represent 70s rock on the front and back of my tee. These are things we feel very passionately about and could express that on a deeper level by making art and sitting in the sun as we watched it develop. This is what art is all about, creating something which gives you a positive sensation and rewarding yourself with something you can be proud of and have forever.
Although the tee shirts came out to a very cool color and design, when they were sitting in direct sunlight for 30 minutes. We found that the blue color was a lot more vibrant than if we were to leave it in direct sunlight for a shorter period of time and be able to more clearly decipher the image. Next time we make cyanotypes and there WILL be a next time, we will leave it in the sun for half the time we did originally although we love the way they turned out this time. And if we want it to be more pigmented than we can just add hydrogen peroxide to our rinsing solution. Now we know what materials we need and what process we need to follow in order to achieve our desired pigment. Overall, we enjoyed making art with chemicals and the freedom to choose a photograph that we value in some kind of way. |
