Assignment Description: This was assigned more towards the beginning of our social movement unit to help us deepen our knowledge of social movements and their greater importance. I feel as though this was a good way for us as adolescents in a constantly changing system, identify what we value and care the most about we individually grow into ourselves. This unit has been a great opportunity to learn about strong social movements and find possible solutions to them. Helping to strengthen our bond with the victims were preaching for.

"These mammals inhabiting such a life force have the right to use their power in an anticipated experience of life. Seaworld has no other purpose in the world other than to heal ocean organisms in pain, to then return them to the vibrant, undiscovered body of water they call home." |
Project Description: The original inspiration for this project was to raise awareness for animal cruelty which then made me think how it’s not only direct human contact that hurt these beautiful creatures but the ability both humans and animals have to be in contact with the environment. I wanted to make a piece that represented how the environment and earth feels toward the way we’ve shaped it today both positively and negatively. So I decided to take a metaphorical approach with real pictures from magazines and paintings to portray my own opinion and creativity into my work. The way this piece was set up, intended to answer the question How have movements throughout history been shaped by social, political, and economic factors? I believe this because one of the sole reasons for deforestation, animal shows, poaching, etc is for economic success. People take these sacred aspects of the world to turn materialistic showing the lack of respect for the biosystems that provide for us and so many more organisms that keep the world working the way it does best. There is no better show of animals than seeing the authenticity of them in their natural habitat. There is no beauty to a tiger skin hanging on the wall than to see and hear her purrs through natural rays of light. There is no lush to be seen through a white picket fence that was once a home to another.

Artist Statement: The world is changing everyday down both positive and negative paths which is affecting the societies of humans, animals and everything in between. My project is an artistic expression of environmentalism which was the root of my op-ed (seaworld) to show the natural world in a collage format and overlaying personalized metaphorical paintings to represent how how some aspects of our world feel towards the environmental issues such as pollution, deforestation, and animal cruelty. As species who forget about the sensitivity of the biosystems we trail on daily and take for granted, we don’t do a very good job of taking care of it. As I’ve read about the relationships between humans and the animals at seaworld, it made me realize how much stress and sadness beings besides humans experience at a similar rate as us. Meanwhile, PETA and the blackfish documentary has done a great job of turning people away from seaworld and encouraging them to spend their money elsewhere. At the end of the day, that’s the only thing the human race cares about, a big fat paycheck and you can’t blame us but there’s so many better ways to make that kind of money rather than going to the extent of destroying the bliss that surrounds us and torturing innocent wild animals. This piece should be used for and symbolize the appreciation we hold for our resourceful planet and each of the organisms here for a reason.
